Artist's Comments

acrylic on canvas 2009
30"x40"

I've recently become a collector of string figures and this painting, and following series, expresses that interest.
The woman in this painting is based on the cover of the scholarly book "Kwakiutl String Figures".

The series is dedicated to Harry Smith, the famous filmmaker, anthropologist, string figure master, ethnomusicologist, magician, and collector of an astonishing range of cultural detritus.

“A man who uses his hands is a laborer. One who uses his hands and mind is a craftsman. He who uses his hands, and his mind, and his heart is an artist.”
