| This group of paintings was inspired by the occult theories of Aleister Crowley, A.O. Spare, and the music of John Zorn as opposed to any previous artistic model. Begun during a period of personal crisis, each one was specifically designed, and "charged", in an attempt to help me through a dark period.Dealing with lost love and the onset of disease, these are my most personal paintings. -2004 Addendum 2008 I find that I'm returning to this method often as new challenges come up, and it is very effective. |

by ~capitolLetter| Alchemy, conjuring, exorcism, strange rites...these are all currents that touch most of my art. During the act of painting I sometimes discover myself mumbling about a variety of things, breathing heavily, etc. Possesion? Ritual? Glossolalia? Possibly all of them. Banishment? No doubt! I find that the notion of "style" is just a tool to arrive at a conclusion, and after the arrival I will put "style" back in the box until it is needed again. But the one constant in everything I do is the subtle art of acceptance. In my mind, my art is a lesson to myself in accepting what happens. I almost never "correct" something as I rarely have a set plan as to how something should look. I like to find out how it looks as it goes. It tells me what it wants to be. And I will use tools to encourage "mistakes"...almost all of my portraits are done using the blind contour drawing of art school practice. I've spent most of my life searching for the interesting, unique, and just plain weird, not only in art but in everything, and it feeds into my art and life equally. I get endless inspiration from off the wall artists, musicians, film makers, occultists, philosophers, scientists, etc. and I will always give credit to those people. |

Artists are magical helpers. Evoking symbols and motifs that connect us to our deeper selves, they can help us along the heroic journey of our own lives.
